In the Heart Chamber of the Sunken Temple, Taban appeared and called on the party to fight him as a test. While they fought, members of the party stepped beneath the scales and paid for their balance with memories and sacrifices, guided by the chained Grandfather Zitembe. Taenae brought the scales to balance with a vow to Chakuna. Zitembe and Taban ascended as the guardians of Order and Chaos and vanished. A last entry in Zitembe’s journal told Inete that the two had held the Convergence together for seven hundred years, Takhesis felt the fury of Acererak, and Glade found the Eye of Ubtao, which gave the party control of the temple.

Recap

The Heart Chamber

It is the afternoon of the twenty-seventh of Flamerule, 1492 DR. The party stands at the threshold of the Heart Chamber inside the Sunken Temple. They mean to confront Taban and to rescue Grandfather Zitembe.

The party enters a grand domed chamber. The Eye of Ubtao hovers as a colossal stone scale mechanism. One side glows with fractured golden light, for Order, and the other seethes with liquid shadow, for Chaos.

Zitembe floats beneath the scales. He is bound by chains etched with the rune “Balance is bought, not borrowed.” He appears emaciated, and bioluminescent moss is draining his life force to sustain the mechanism.

Mosaics on the walls depict the fall of Ubtao’s empire and the rise of the undead plague.

Taban

As the party steps forward, Taban materializes from blooming shadow and lightning. He is the gladiator, Vogal’s shield-brother, who faded into the jungle after the party woke from Valachan. He is clad in obsidian plate etched with serpents. His face is sharper and hungrier, and his eyes glow amber, with pupils slit like a predator’s.

He says, “Vogal… Still swinging that morningstar like it’s all you have. Some things never change.”

He reveals the truth of his absence: “Centuries, brother… I tore Valachan apart with these hands to drag Chakuna back from oblivion. She showed me the cost of Balance: everything you love. Everything you were.”

Vogal challenges him. Taban slams his serrated glaive into the stone and answers, “I did too—once. Before I saw the scales tip. Before I understood: mercy without sacrifice is just cowardice.”

As Chakuna’s shadow engulfs him, Taban issues his final test: “Prove you are worthy inheritors! Fight me with all your rage, your hope, your sorrow! Hesitate… and I will show you why mercy died with my humanity.”

As the fight begins he says, “Make it count. For Chult.”

The trial of balance

Taban fights with the ferocity of a fallen paladin, wielding shadowflame and void energy. He taunts the party as he fights.

To Inete he says, “Every bandage you apply only tightens his chains, girl. Some wounds must bleed to heal.”

To Takhesis he says, “Finally—the architect’s puppet shows teeth! Balance isn’t kindness… It’s a blade that severs the rotten branch.”

To Vonara he says, “Your songs won’t soothe this beast… But I remember how your ballads made me smile. A lifetime ago.”

While the fight goes on, members of the party step onto the platform beneath the scales. A psychic command demands payment. They have to recount memories of Order or Chaos and offer sacrifices of vitality, magic or memories. Even in his pain, Zitembe guides them: “The memory must resonate… or the price will break you.”

As the scales near balance, Taban’s form begins to fray. He stumbles, and his exhaustion shows. He says, “You think I wanted this? To become this… thing? Ubtao sleeps. Chakuna starves. And we… we are the last embers.”

Taenae steps forward to tip the scales to perfect equilibrium. She binds herself further to Chakuna, vowing to use her form as a Queen Displacer Beast to its utmost.

The ascension

The scales lock, and a prismatic beam pierces the chamber. Zitembe cracks into living stone and becomes the Stone Tyrannosaurus Rex of Order. Taban dissolves into smoke and obsidian fur and becomes the Shadow Displacer Beast of Chaos.

Zitembe says, “We anchored Balance for 700 years… Now we become its pillars. Remember us not as martyrs, but as men who chose this.”

Taban looks at Vogal one last time and says, “When you drink at The Dead Fish… pour one out for the man I was. The Architect hungers for your souls. We deny him ours. Make it worth the cost, little heroes.”

They disappear into the ether of Chult and leave only a stone tablet. It reads “The 7th Convergence is complete. The Scales are yours to bear.”

The journal and the Eye

Inete, clutching her grandfather’s journal, finds a final, fresh entry. In it Zitembe confesses that he and Taban held the Convergence for seven hundred years. They were never enemies. They were partners keeping the world alive. He had let her believe that the temple was a prison and that Chakuna was an enemy.

The entry gives the reason for the ascension: “Because if we die as mortals… the Atropal feasts on 700 years of our souls.” Of what he leaves her, Zitembe writes, “I traded my humanity… for your tomorrow.”

Takhesis feels an icy dagger in his skull. It is the fury of Acererak, the Architect, echoing in his mind: “YOU ROBBED ME OF THEIR SOULS!” Acererak has lost two powerful souls that he intended to harvest.

Glade inspects the mechanism and finds the Eye of Ubtao. The Eye controls the temple. The temple is now a Bastion, a fortified base of operations for the party.

Aftermath

  • Zitembe had ascended as the eternal guardian of Order, and Taban as the eternal guardian of Chaos. Both were gone from the temple.
  • Acererak was enraged at the loss of their souls.
  • Taenae had bound herself further to Chakuna.
  • Inete had read her grandfather’s last entry.
  • The party held the Eye of Ubtao and, through it, the Sunken Temple as their Bastion.
