The Black Opal Crown was an ancient artifact tied to the Yuan-ti, which the party found at the center of the Maze of Death on the fourth level of the Tomb of the Nine Gods and left where it sat.12 It was next seen on the brow of Savriel Tirinath in the Cradle, and it went with her when Dendar took her.34

Powers

The party never handled the crown and knew its power only by report. Napaka, the last queen of Omu, called it ancient and unholy. Legend held, she said, that on scaled brows it could wake Dendar the Night Serpent, or open a gateway to her prison.2

History

In the maze

At midday on the fifteenth of Eleasis, 1492 DR, the party went into the Maze of Death, reached its center and saw the crown there. They chose to leave it completely alone, and whatever trap it sat on stayed unsprung.1

What Napaka said

That night, in her crypt on the same level, the dead queen stirred and spoke to the party, and the crown was one of the things she told them of.2

On Savriel

On the afternoon of the sixteenth, when Savriel stepped out of the dark at the top of the Cradle’s stairs, the crown was on her brow. Nobody remarked on it.3 How it came from the maze to her is not recorded.

When the Cradle began to come apart she prayed: “Dendar, Night Serpent, Serpent Mother… Take what is left of me. Take all of it.” She was swallowed by a great serpent’s maw, and the crown went with her.4
